Interesting Facts
Although North Cascades National Park may hold some very interesting facts, there are some that stand out more than others. This park is commonly nicknamed as the “American
Alps” because of its high snow covered peaks. Did you know that the following
mountains were named by early white explorers who used them as barriers: Mt
Terror, Mt Challenger, Mt Fury, Mt Despair, Mt Torment, and Desolation Peak?
Another interesting thing about this park is that it holds the record for the
greatest number of plant species that are recorded in a national park. There
are more than one thousand six hundred and thirty vascular plant species as
well as more than double this number of non-vascular and fungal species. The reason for so many plants is because the moist
climate is very rich for the soil making them grow quickly. Because of this
rapid growth, every year paths have to be cleared. These are some of the most important facts about North Cascades.
